News Release

Assault at Roye-Williams Elementary

On June 16, 2026, at approximately 3:33 p.m., during afternoon dismissal at Roye-Williams Elementary School, deputies responded to a call for assistance from school staff. Staff reported an assault occurred in which two school personnel were injured. Upon arrival, deputies located the victims, who were suffering from injuries consistent with being stabbed. Evidence collected at the scene supports the preliminary assessment made by responding deputies that an attack had occurred. No students were harmed during the incident.

School staff and responding deputies to include a roving School Resource Officer (SRO) quickly acted, providing immediate first aid until EMS arrived and took over care. Sheriff’s Office Command arrived quickly and established Command of the scene. Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment and have since been released.

Detectives are actively communicating with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.

Sheriff Gahler recognizes the community’s concerns and understands the desire for more information. Maryland law protecting juvenile offenders currently restricts law enforcement from releasing additional details regarding this incident.

“The safety of our students and school staff is my absolute priority,” said Sheriff Gahler. “While state law limits the information we can release at this time, please know that swift effective actions were taken by school staff and responding deputies to prevent further injury. I am incredibly grateful for the brave actions of the school staff and our School Resource Officer, whose quick response brought this situation under control.”

Our Elementary School SRO program assigns one School Resource Officer to multiple schools. This is a contrast to our Middle and High Schools that each have deputies specifically assigned to the school. For the past three years, Sheriff Gahler has requested funding to expand this program. These requests have not been approved by the Cassilly Administration.
