Move Over/Slow Down Law
October is practically here. This means the leaves are changing color, the weather is getting cooler and the citations we issue are now pumpkin spice flavored. Well, that last part may not be true yet, but I am still working on that. Something else that happens every October is that new Maryland laws take effect. This week for #traffictiptuesday I want to go over two of them that you may not know about.
The first new law is not a new law at all. It is actually an expansion of an existing Maryland Law. Traffic article 21-405 e2i is commonly known as the “Move Over/Slow Down” law. This law requires motorists to change lanes (if possible) and slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle that is on the shoulder of the road. Later this law was expanded to include tow trucks and trash collection vehicles. On October 1st, the law is being expanded yet again. Soon, you will be required to move over and slow down for ANY vehicle on the side of the road. This includes any passenger vehicle that is displaying hazard lights, warning cones or road flares. Failure to move over and slow down could lead to a fine of $110 and 1 point on your license.
The second new law coming on the horizon concerns child safety seats. While safety seat laws have been enforceable in Maryland for quite a long time, starting on October 1st, children under the age of 2 will be REQUIRED to ride in a rear facing child seat until the child reaches the weight or height limit specified by the manufacturer of the child safety seat.
Hopefully you will be sure to obey these and ALL other Maryland traffic laws. I would hate for anyone to get a bland, pumpkin spice scented tickets.
As always, if you have a question or concern, please leave it in the comments below. Also, if you have a specific concern with unsafe driving in your area, such as speeding, drag racing, etc., give us a call, send an email, or reach out on social media. Until next week, slow down, pay attention, wear your seatbelt, and drive safely
