Official Statement from Sheriff Gahler

As we conclude our third covert operation in partnership with Chris Hansen targeting individuals who attempted to exploit and prey upon children, our commitment remains absolute: those who seek to harm children will not find refuge in Harford County. At the same time, it is essential that public discourse surrounding these cases remain responsible, respectful and safe.

Crimes involving children understandably generate anger and outrage throughout our community. That reaction is natural, but these cases also carry a profound and often unexpected impact on the families and friends of the accused. Most likely, people who had no knowledge of the alleged conduct and are now grappling with the same disturbing information as the rest of the community.

Make no mistake, accountability belongs solely to the individual responsible. Innocent and uninvolved family members and friends must not be blamed, publicly targeted, harassed, or threatened because of another person’s alleged actions. We ask our community to show compassion toward uninvolved parties, avoid threatening rhetoric, and allow the justice system to hold the appropriate individuals accountable.

We are aware of concerns regarding public comments posted on our social media platforms. As a government agency operating a public forum, we cannot remove comments simply because they are offensive, unpopular, or inconsistent with our views. Moderation is limited to what the law and our established social media policy permit. However, credible threats or potentially unlawful conduct will be reviewed and addressed appropriately.
