Message from Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler about the future of School Resources Officers

Just three short years ago, we joined with the County Executive, the School Superintendent, the chiefs of police for the local agencies and the State Police in Harford County for a Town Hall event to have an open and honest community driven discussion about safety in our schools and more specifically the safety of our children in schools. More than 1,000 seats were reserved online and the message from our community was loud and clear – more School Resource Officers (SRO) were needed in our schools. I heard you, the County Executive heard you, the Superintendent heard you, and the governments of the municipal areas heard you! Working together, community and government, we expanded the safety and security in our public schools by increasing the police presence in Harford County’s schools.

This year, some legislators in Annapolis are hoping to change direction, and go against the will of the people. Senate Bill 245 and House Bill 496 would effectively disband SRO Programs in our State. It is inexcusable to put the safety of our children at risk to achieve a political point. Stand for what is right. Stand with our dedicated SROs in opposition of this profound error and let your representative know how you feel.
