News Release

Detectives close a nearly 20-year-old homicide case

On August 26, 2007, Deputies were dispatched to the 1900 block of Edgewater Drive, Edgewood, Maryland for a stabbing. The victim, an adult male named David Arnold Byrd Jr., was located by Deputies suffering from a single stab wound to the upper body. Mr. Byrd was transported to a local trauma center where he succumbed to his injures.

Following the initial investigation by HCSO detectives, Gary Williams, an adult male from Edgewood, was identified as a person of interest. Despite continued efforts, detectives were unable to gather sufficient evidence at the time to formally charge Williams in connection with Mr. Byrd’s death.

As with all “cold” cases, HCSO detectives have remained committed to pursuing justice. Over the past eighteen years, the investigation into Mr. Byrd’s homicide has remained active.

Recently, detectives located and interviewed a witness who came forward with new information. The witness’s account was deemed credible and provided investigators with the necessary evidence to move forward. As a result, Gary Williams was indicted on charges related to the murder of David Arnold Byrd Jr., and an arrest warrant was issued. Williams is currently imprisoned within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, serving a sentence for an unrelated crime. Upon release, he will be taken into the custody of HCSO.

Speaking on the case, Sheriff Gahler said, “No matter how long it takes, solving every homicide case remains a top priority for our Office. We want justice and closure for the loved ones of the victim, we want the offender to be held accountable, and we want Harford County to remain the safe place that it is.”
