Harford County Detention Center Inmate Dies at Hospital

A 28-year-old inmate from the Harford County Detention Center died Monday at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center after experiencing a cardiac arrest.

At approximately 3:35 p.m., deputies assigned to the Harford County Detention Center
alerted medical staff an inmate was in need of assistance. After evaluating the inmate’s health, medical staff determined the inmate would need to be transported to the hospital for further evaluation and care. While being transported to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by medics with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Department, the inmate went into cardiac arrest. The inmate, identified as Michael Belt, 28, of Pasadena, Maryland, was pronounced deceased by medical staff at the University of Maryland, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center at 5:05 p.m.

Pursuant to policy, the inquiry into the death was assumed by detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators with the Forensic Services Unit also responded to document the scene and collect evidence. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was notified, and responded to the hospital.

Belt was booked into the Detention Center on July 26, 2018 for D.U.I., and was held
without bail following a hearing on July 27. While at the Detention Center, Belt was monitored by medical staff due to preexisting conditions.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
