A man is in custody for the December 10 murder of William Doran in Joppatowne.
On December 10, 2021, at 6:45 p.m., patrol deputies assigned to the Southern Precinct of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 500 block of Dembytown Road in Joppatowne for the report of a single vehicle collision. Upon the arrival of deputies, medics were performing CPR on an adult male, identified as William James Doran, 29, of Joppatowne. While evaluating Doran for care, medics discovered he was shot in the upper body. Medics transported Doran to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation was assumed by detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division who were supported by investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Unit.
Detectives and investigators leveraged technology and combined with traditional law enforcement efforts and cooperation from the community, Alton William Cumbo, Jr, 28, of Edgewood was developed as the suspect. On December 14, 2021, an arrest warrant was obtained by detectives for Cumbo charging him with 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree assault and 2nd degree assault.
On December 15, 2021, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Cumbo was taken into custody by detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Special Investigations Division, Special Operations Division and Warrant Apprehension Unit. The arrest was without incident and was made while Cumbo was walking his dog in a residential area in Towson.
While the investigation is ongoing, detectives believe all involved parties are accounted for and there is no on-going threat to the community. Cumbo and Doran were known to one another. Cumbo had threatened Doran earlier in the day.
“We want to thank all who helped with this case,” said Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler. “It’s because of these positive relationships with entities such as the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack and the Baltimore County Police, that we were able to take this dangerous individual into custody. Their help, along with information and support from our community, has ensured that a murderer will have his day in court.”
