On August 26, Lieutenant Robert Burgess initiated a routine traffic stop, that quickly escalated to an attempted homicide, when the driver of a Penske truck deliberately swerved toward the lieutenant, striking him and causing critical injuries.
Following the incident, a multi-state manhunt led to the identification and apprehension of the suspect, Juan Yahir Quiroz Manzueta, who was located at an apartment in New Rochelle, New York. In coordination with our law enforcement partners in New York, Manzueta was taken into custody on multiple charges, including first- and second-degree assault and attempted second-degree murder.
Manzueta declined to waive extradition. After several weeks of legal proceedings, he was successfully returned to Maryland to face trial for the alleged offenses. On Friday, November 7, he was processed into the Harford County Detention Center, where he remains held without bail.
