Window Tinting
I was at the precinct this morning and I bumped into Deputy Keller. Deputy Keller is assigned to a Southern Precinct patrol shift. In addition to his primary duties, Deputy Keller does a fantastic job of keeping our roadways safe through traffic enforcement initiatives. When I asked Deputy Keller what traffic tip I should cover this week he did not hesitate when he said, “Tint! Talk about illegal window tint!” So, with assistance from Deputy Tim Keller I am proud to bring you, “Timmy Tint Tuesday.”
Window tint is becoming an increasing problem in our county as more and more drivers are blacking out their windows. Not only does this decrease visibility for the driver (especially at night), it also serves to hide the identity and actions of the vehicle occupants. This can be quite dangerous for a Deputy making a traffic stop.
Maryland law states that 35% of natural light must be able to pass through your side windows of your vehicle. Many Deputies carry tint meters while on patrol. These devices measure the light passing through a window. If you are under 35% you could receive a $70.00 fine. No window tinting material is permitted on the windshield.
“But Deputy Keller and Sergeant Eaton, what if I have a doctors note?” Some drivers may be grants permission from a doctor to utilize window tint darker than 35%, however this does not apply to the windshield.
Thanks to Deputy Keller for a great topic idea this week.
