Child Safety Seats
Earlier today we shared an upcoming event for Kids in Safety Seats (K.I.S.S.). Well in this week’s #TrafficTipTuesday, Sgt. Eaton has more information on child safety seats!
“No matter how safe we try to be sometimes a vehicle collision just simply isn’t avoidable (I mean unless you follow every single one of my traffic tips!). So far in 2022, 155 drivers and 30 vehicle passengers have died in motor vehicle crashes across the state. Obviously, all adult passengers should be wearing a safety belt, but this week I want to talk about what we can do to keep the kiddos safe.
Maryland law requires that ALL children under eight years of age ride in an appropriate restraint unless the child is 4’9” or taller. An appropriate restraint is whichever is appropriate for your child based on the vehicle and the restraint instructions. Taller children may need only a booster seat while others may require a full-sized safety seat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers some great resources when it comes to child safety seats. https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/car-seats-and-booster-seats
One of the most important things to remember when it comes to child safety is this: it is YOUR responsibility as the vehicle operator to make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained. You may tell the Deputy that your child took off the seat belt after you started driving, but the child will not be the one receiving the 83-dollar citation.
In you would like more information, or to schedule an in-person car seat check, you can contact Kids in Safety Seats (K.I.S.S.) using this link. https://health.maryland.gov/phpa/OEHFP/KISS/Pages/Home.aspx
As always, if you have a question or concern, please leave it in the comments below. Also, if you have a specific concern with unsafe driving in your area, such as speeding, drag racing, etc., give us a call, send an email, or reach out on social media. Until next week, slow down, pay attention, wear your seatbelt, and drive safely
