Be Prepared

We all saw the mess that was I-95 in Virginia in the snow last week. And in this season, that is always at risk of happening. This week, Sgt. Eaton has some tips to keep you protected if you get stranded in your car for a prolonged period in this week’s #TrafficTipTuesday!

“I am sure many of you heard about the ginormous traffic back up on Interstate 95 in Virginia last week. Many motorists were stuck for several hours. For this week’s #traffictiptuesday, I wanted to send some tips on items you should keep in your vehicle in case something unexpected happens to you.

Obviously, before taking a long road trip, you want to check the mechanics of your vehicle. Tires, engines, wiper fluid, etc. are all important, but what should you take with you IN your vehicle in case of an emergency? This is certainly not an all-encompassing list, but it is certainly a good start.

Gas – One thing Traffic Sergeant Eaton is VERY guilty of is running almost all the way out of gas before filling up. If I were stranded in that Virginia backup with no gas in my car, I would have been in real trouble. A good rule of thumb is to never let your vehicle get below a half tank.

Cellphone – Make sure your cell phone is fully charged before embarking on your trip. Not only can you use it to call emergency services, you can also use your GPS if you end up getting lost.

Flashlight – One thing I carry with me everywhere I go is a flashlight. You never know when you may need a little extra light. This is especially important when traveling.

Blanket – One for each person in the car should suffice. You never know when your vehicle may break down and you find yourself without heat for an extended period

Water and Snacks – Some types of non-perishable goodies can come in handy if you find yourself stranded for any length of time. A box of protein bars kept in your truck could be a real lifesaver.

If you would like to see a longer list of emergency items, check out this link that was sent to me by my predecessor, Traffic Sgt Lane. https://blog.cheapism.com/emergency-items-for-car-3945/

As always, if you have a question or concern, please leave it in the comments below. Also, if you have a specific concern with unsafe driving in your area, such as speeding, drag racing, etc., give us a call, send an email, or reach out on social media. Until next week, slow down, pay attention, wear your seatbelt, and drive safely
